I have always considered myself to be a creator, from the creation and development of ideas to the creation and craft of a product. Growing up, I knew that I wanted to pursue a career based in creativity, but I was not particularly gifted in traditional art. This caused me to second guess if I was truly a creator, after all, how could I be an artist if I couldn’t create successful art? It was at this point I discovered the world of design, and I fell in love with the combination of creativity and organization. I knew I had found where I fit into the creative industry.
As I have delved into my studies of graphic design, I have found a passion specifically for typography. I find it fascinating how typefaces have personalities and and play such a huge role in design, but can often be overlooked. The initial steps of my design process always begin with in depth typographic research, as type can make or break a design. For my process, starting with a strong typographic base creates a clear direction for the rest of the design. After establishing a foundation for the design, I move on to elements such as composition and organization. I begin all of my designs in black and white, then move into color once a clear direction is established.
My style as a designer is very clean, modern, and minimalist. I strive to create designs that effectively communicate through as little visual information as necessary. I design through the lens of a designer, the client, and the intended audience. It is these three perspectives that create a well rounded, successful design, one or two cannot be successful without the other. I have always viewed the designer to client relationship as an equal partnership, with equal input and value. Successful design is all about collaboration, not only between client and designer, but also within the creative community.
My most recent collection of work has allowed me to explore the concept of branding and brand identity design in multiple areas of graphic design, such as product packaging, user interface design, and advertisements. I’ve learned the importance of creating consistency across all brand platforms to create brand recognition. I have found a passion for branding as a whole, from the logo development process to the creation of brand elements such as packaging. Looking to the future, I see myself working as a brand designer, working with a variety of clients to establish a strong and unique brand identity.
