In a world filled with growing voices we as designers are given the honor to be the voice for those who can’t design. Being a designer means giving power to those who may not be able to articulate themselves in the best way. My work consists of mostly text relationships, stemming from cultural understandings of type to form and space correlations on one page. I use vast expression of negative space to give the eye a place to rest on a design while still being informative with the little amount of text being used. A little truly does mean a lot. After working for years for various churches and companies in my area I have gained some strengths in learning different design styles that are catered to each specific audience. Logo and logotype designs are a strong point of mine. That being said I have been tasked many times to do different types of designs from social media reaching an audience to very permanent sets of information that display who people really are and want the world to see them. My professional life as a designer has been more for others than myself. My favorite aspect of design are the conversations that come into fruition when learning who people are. Society has a way to constantly surprise as you learn more about different sets of people. Design in a broader sense is made to reach people as much as possible however, some designs that are more personal become my favorite. The personal designs give an amazing opportunity to really learn who people are. Being a designer takes a lot of heart. Heart that can propel you into a design and keep you there for hours at a time creating something for others to experience. It’s a life choice to take that time out of your life to give at least something to someone else. It’s our contribution as designers to the world. Time is too precious to waste. Honestly in my experience the role of a designer is taken for granted. No one really understands the mindset that we have to have to be able to connect both our objects and subjects. We connect our design elements in order to connect people to something that may be glossed over in the passing of time. To make a statement. The process of creating and designing is a journey into the unknown. Starting from scratch and molding what the design wants to become. As we design and build onto an idea there is a learning experience to be had. Learning what the client like as well as learning new things about yourself. Taking on a new job is taking on a new adventure to find new things about who you are. To grow and to build onto who you want to become. I recently worked on a logo project for a woodworking company. Seeing that logo laser printed on a piece of wood and seeing the digital turned into physical was an enlightening experience that opened a door to someone else’s world. My goal as a designer is to open as many doors as possible.
