My name is Hannah Lee, and I am a graphic design major at East Carolina University. To me, design is about the core relationship between an internal idea and visual communication. The digital environment allows me as a designer to express different concepts of the world that I find interesting and entertaining to the mind. My beginning process work often involves researching different categories of typefaces, color palettes, and images that I believe fit within a project description when first marking out the type of “brand identity” I want to create. This task includes sketching out different ranges of concepts across digital and traditional elements, as well as combining these components and moving to the next steps of finalizing a brand. When mentioning process, the technique of trial and error is very significant in my work as I believe learning is an essential part of the design process and is crucial for achieving any work in a flexible, and everchanging career field. In the world of design, things are constantly changing just like the world around us. I’ve learned that being in this career field means that you get the opportunity to work on projects that are vastly different from on another. Getting to work for new and exciting clients and learning about experiences from all sorts of different perspectives is something I look forward to when entering the career field.
As a designer, I also find it extremely important to create a workplace environment that is suitable for not only you but your team as well. By having the experience of working in a class environment, I have learned that it is important to be able to work as a team, especially when you’re surrounded by fellow designers. It feels good to be able to carry a lengthy conversation with people who relate to you and could even potentially be working alongside you after graduation. As someone who has always worked well by themselves, recently, I’ve noticed that it’s also extremely important to be a team player and help complete an assignment at hand, no matter what the situation is.
Being a junior in the major, I have learned that my ideas and concepts have always been catered in part by those who I surround myself within my personal life. Since the beginning, I’ve always enjoyed working with people and being inspired by different forms of art and design. My process and constant growth are key components in my design work, all while I hope to also include the freedom and liberty of expression in my art. While my craftsmanship is extremely important to me, I also try hard to produce art which is bold and colorful. Whether that be carried through the logo of a brand or the packaging they include, my work often reflects a clean, composed, and striking look that stands tall among pastel backgrounds that I often use for contrast in my mockup concepts.
