My name is Maryjoe Cortes Rosas, and I am a graphic designer and illustrator who strives to create interesting and trendy designs that keep viewers interested. Pulling people in with interesting and unique designs is my ultimate goal as a designer. Art has always been something I have been interested in from a young age, I knew I wanted art to be a bigger part of my life. I started with an interest in character art and illustration which later developed into more. I wasn’t aware of graphic design as a field and as a possible career until my freshman year. Once I learned about graphic design, a whole new world opened up with a million possibilities. Learning new skills and rules of design helped me with my illustrative work as well. My understanding of composition and negative space has influenced my illustrative work as I started exploring graphic design. I became fascinated with design once I noticed it was something that influenced everything we consume and it is something that is essential to consuming media, apps, websites, and more. This truly made me fall deeper in love with the art of graphic design. It’s something that is everywhere and on everything. I wish to be a part of this so I can help create interesting designs for people to enjoy and consume, something memorable and unique.
I still struggle slightly with finding a style I am completely comfortable with, but I know I’m still growing. My current work is fairly consistent and I have a design and illustration bias toward designing and drawing patterns. Something I’ve been focusing on is bringing in new and interesting color combinations into my work to make them more interesting and visually appealing. Using color to expand the visual identity of the brands and themes I have come up with has been a treat to explore. Learning proper color theory and implementing my new knowledge in my work has impacted both my graphic and illustrative work. Product design and exploring possible patterns that could encompass the brands personality and identity is something I’ve been very interested in exploring further. Mixing this illustrative side of my art and my graphic design is something I’ve just recently explored and I love it. I hope to be able to take these aspects of my current work further so I can expand my work and develop my own personal style with both of my artistic fields. In the next stage of my life and future professional career, I hope to work in any field that can help me explore this part of myself. Somewhere where my skills can flourish and be appreciated so that I can further cultivate my growth as a designer.
