Hi, my name is Anna Query, and I am a Graphic designer at East Carolina University. The work you are viewing today is from my junior year in the graphic design program. I included are Beer Can/Advertisement project, Personal Trademark project, and Mobile App.
When I first came to ECU, I wanted to go into film, and while I was taking my classes for film, I got the opportunity to take a graphic design class at the same time. I ended up falling in love with design. Unlike in film, design has the power of always being unique in every project, like packaging, signage, advertising, branding, or visual identity. Not only is design different with every assignment you do. There is much communication that comes with the major as well. My minor at ECU is communication; going into college, I thought I had excellent communication skills as someone who is a big extrovert. After taking communications classes, I feel more confident talking to my clients.
When working with my clients, I have learned that communication is a significant aspect and knowing precisely what they would like in their design. For example, with the Mobile App project (The Anatomy of Fitness), this client gave me much freedom regarding the layout, color palette, and type. While it was nice to have this flexibility, I would keep changing the idea of the layout and see which one my client liked better, which caused me to go back and forth on this project so much. Another example would be the Personal Trademark project; this client was stricter regarding the layout, color palette, and type. While working with this client, I learned very fast about how to design a specific layout. What I mean by this is when you design a résumé or envelope, there are rules when coming to size, and on the envelope, there are specific rules like type and layout you must follow designing an envelope, which I didn’t know before. Finally, like the first two I mentioned, my last example would be the Beer/Advertisement project. Again, I had much freedom when it came to the layout, color palette, and type, but when designing, I was designing on an 8.5 X 11 artboard, and I didn’t think when my client wanted it on a mockup of the beer size would not be anywhere close to an 8.5 X 11.
In concussion, this year, was the first year when I was working with clients. While my clients gave me much freedom when it came to my designs, I also learned that communication with your clients is just as important as a design.
